Balloon Sinuplasty Post-Operative Instructions

On the day of your procedure you will be given a valium to take 30 minutes prior to
arriving at the office. You may eat a very light breakfast on the day of the
procedure.

You will be given a topical anesthetic during the procedure that will cause difficulty
swallowing for up to 2 hours after the procedure. You are not to eat or drink for 2
hours after the procedure.

You can expect bleeding for the first 36 hours after the surgery, which will be caught
by a nasal drip pad. You may change the pad as needed until bleeding stops. You
may need to change the drip pad 3-4 times an hour for the first 6 hours after
surgery.

No nose blowing after surgery for 3 days and no excercise for 72 hours.

Begin Afrin (oxymetazoline) over-the-counter nasal saline spray starting the night of
surgery. Spray 2 sprays each nostril twice daily for 2-3 days as needed for persistent
bleeding and congestion.

Begin nasal saline irrigations the morning after surgery. Expect old blood in the
nasal wash. Remember not to blow your nose after irrigation.

Facial headache and pressure as well as temporary loss of smell are normal after
the procedure. Contact Dr. Kelsch for excessive bleeding, fever, chills, vision
changes or severe headache not controlled by medications.

Follow up is usually 7-10 days after the procedure.
